The Aldo Leopold Foundation is pleased to share the Leopold family's legacy of keeping phenology records through the publication of the 2025 Wisconsin Phenology Calendar. Phenology is the study of the timing of seasonal events in nature. Wildlife emerging from hibernation, birds nesting and migrating, and flowers blooming are a few of the many phenological events happening around us every year.
A very special thank you to Dr. Stanley Temple for writing and updating the text in the 2025 Wisconsin Phenology Calendar. Without his expertise and continued work with historical and present-day data, our understanding of phenological changes in Wisconsin would be incomplete. Dr. Temple recently retired from the academic position at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, once held by Aldo Leopold. He is now a Professor Emeritus, Senior Fellow at the Aldo Leopold Foundation, and inductee of the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame.

The Aldo Leopold Foundation has recently made huge strides in land stewardship and in growing our global community through online programming, anchored by Leopold’s work and words. When we add up all those who engaged this past year with our website, social media pages, e-newsletter subscriptions and virtual programming, more than 400,000 people in the U.S. and abroad are now part of the land ethic community!
