Sharon Dunwoody

Sharon Dunwoody is the Evjue-Bascom Professor Emerita in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her long association with the university’s Gaylord Nelson Institute of Environmental Studies has allowed her to work with students and faculty on a variety of environmental issues. As a scholar, she studies the ways people use messages to make judgments about science and environmental issues, and has written and co-edited several books, including Scientists and Journalists (Free Press, 1986) and Communicating Uncertainty (Earlbaum, 1999), along with many book chapters and articles.

She has twice been head of the General Interest in Science and Engineering section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and is past president of the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research (MAPOR) and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). She is a fellow of AAAS, MAPOR, and the Society for Risk Analysis, as well as a recipient of AEJMC’s Paul J. Deutschmann Award for research excellence and the UW-Madison’s Hilldale Award for “distinguished professional accomplishments.”
