More Chances to Tour the Shack

Previously offered only on Saturdays, guided Shack tours will now be offered daily, Tuesday through Saturday at 1:00 pm. We look forward to accommodating more guests and sharing the place that was the chief inspiration for Aldo Leopold’s seminal work, A Sand County Almanac, with more and more visitors.

About the Shack

The Leopold Shack and Farm was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2009 acknowledging the significance of this place to Aldo Leopold and his contributions to conservation on a national scale.

The land surrounding the Leopold Shack continues to be a living classroom for exploring ecological relationships and conservation history. Guided public tours offer visitors an opportunity to hear stories about the pioneering restoration work initiated by Leopold and his family. Visitors can take a step inside the Shack – a step back in time – to reimagine the Leopold family living and learning about the land together. Then take a stroll through the restored prairie and woods that Leopold and family tended to with great love and respect.
