The Aldo Leopold Foundation is seeking volunteers to assist with sandhill crane counts near the Leopold Shack during the months of November and December. Help us track the number of cranes congregating on the Wisconsin River while taking in the sights and sounds of thousands of the very birds Aldo Leopold feared would no longer grace his beloved Shack property.
Crane count dates for 2018 are November 5, 12, 18 & 25 and December 3 & 10. Four volunteers are needed on each date to accurately count cranes as they roost for the evening on the islands and sandbars of the Wisconsin River. Counting begins 2.5 hours before sunset and concludes at dark. Previous experience is welcome but not necessary. All volunteers will receive crane counting protocol and training.
If you are interested in taking part in this unique volunteer opportunity, please contact Stewardship Fellow Tanya Iretskaya at tiretskaia@aldoleopold.org by Monday, October 15.
Update 10/10/18: Thanks to your enthusiastic support, we have filled all available spots for 2018!
