Operating from a base camp in the Zuni Mountains of New Mexico, the Cottonwood Gulch Foundation is in its 95th year of sponsoring educational explorations (“treks”) of the Four Corners states. In 2020 the “Flocks and Rocks Trek,” an adults-only group that annually visits areas with great birding and spectacular geology, will visit Leopold’s haunts in the White Mountains of Arizona and adjacent New Mexico. We will camp on Escudilla Mountain and in the Blue River Valley and try to imbibe the spirit of Leopold as we consider how flocks, rocks, and everything else constitute the Land.
