“Conservation means harmony between men and land. When land does well for its owner,
and the owner does well by his land, when both end up better by the partnership, we have conservation.
When one or the other grows poorer, we do not.” --Aldo Leopold |
For the past eight years, the Woodland School has been assisting people responsible for managing both public and private land in creating and realizing their own conservation vision. Our hands-on approach gives participants the confidence to take positive actions from participating in a prescribed burn on their property to selecting trees for timber stand improvement in their woodlot, to applying herbicides in controlling invasive species.
At the Woodland School we understand that there are many facets of conscientious land stewardship. The process of cultivating your own personal Land Ethic and acquiring the skills to incorporate into your management practices
can take many years. As your awareness and the complexity of your projects grow, you may feel the need for new and different types of learning opportunities to help you along the way.
Good land management is an extended learning experience. The process is composed of different steps, all of which are essential considerations of conscientious land stewardship. We feel that it is important to address all of these considerations in our course offerings, and so that you can more easily think about how our workshops may fit into your goals for your land, we have broken the learning process into some broad categories:
Resources |
Threats |
Stewardship Skills |
Vision |
Identifying the biotic community on your land |
Understanding and controlling threats to the integrity of your land |
Developing a skill set of management practices to care for your land |
Refining your vision of your land: past, present, and future |
I hope you will join us this year, whether you are just starting out or have been actively managing your land for years, we strive to offer broad-based classes can continue to empower the decisions you make on your land.
