Anticipating Spring: Lulu Lake Preserve in Seasonal Transition
Sunday, March 2nd
Lake Lulu Preserve
East Troy, WI

Celebrate Aldo Leopold Weekend with a hike at the Nature Conservancy's Lulu Lake Preserve in the Kettle Moraine area of Southeastern Wisconsin. Hikers will look for early emerging wildflowers, signs of wildlife and migrating geese, and make occasional stops to read pieces written by Leopold and other environmental writers. Pat Morton, The Conservancy's Mukwonago River Watershed Project Director, will lead the hike and discuss how stewardship activities at the preserve follow Leopold's land management philosophy, "The first rule of intelligent tinkering is to save all the pieces." Learn about what it takes to maintain the diverse habitats on this exceptionally beautiful property. As part of the hike Pat will also lead a short, silent meditative walk to fully experience the sights, sounds, and smells of Lulu Lake Preserve in early spring.

Reservations are required for the two-hour hike, which will be limited to 20 people. Parking is limited so please carpool if possible. To reserve a spot, call Sandy at the Nature Conservancy at 262-642-7276 Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

There are no restroom facilities at Lulu Lake, and the hike still takes place regardless of weather, so please dress accordingly. The trails aren't plowed and may be snow or ice covered. Lulu Lake preserve is located at N9564 Nature Road, just south of the Walworth/Waukesha county line between highways 83 and 67. To reach it, take highway J to Nature Road. Drive 1.5 miles north on Nature Road and turn right at the driveway by the Nature Conservancy sign.

Aldo Leopold Kick –Off Event
Film: “The Greatest Good”
February 25, 6:00 PM –EAC (UWEC Hilltop Basement)
Cost: FREE

This film will revisit an American journey from the timbered shores of the Pacific Northwest to the marble halls of Washington DC., documenting our rich natural heritage and controversy often associated with how we steward the lands that sustain and inspire us.

This film was produced as part of the U.S. Forest Service’s 100th Anniversary as they shaped the debate over land stewardship for a hundred years. The journey from the “wise use” of resources to the idea of a “land ethic” has defined the evolution of the Forest Service and the management of National Forests and Grasslands.
