“That land is a community is the basic concept of ecology, but that land is to be loved and respected is an extension of ethics.”

“A land ethic, then, reflects the existence of an ecological conscience, and this in turn reflects a conviction ofindividual responsibility for the health of the land.”

Staff Profile: Bob Lange

Name: Bob Lange

Job Title: Development Director

What is your educational and professional background? I have a B.S. in liberal arts with a sociology/psychology double major. I have advanced designations from the American College as a Chartered Financial Consultant and I am currently enrolled in Gift College pursuing a designation  as a Certified Gift Planning Professional (CGPP).

Where are you originally from? I was born in Milwaukee, WI and raised 20 miles west in Pewaukee (rural at the time).

What brought you to work in the environmental field? A search firm asked me to interview for the development director position at the International Crane Foundation in 2002 and I was subsequently hired.

How long have you worked for ALF? I have been here since May, 2006.

What is your favorite part of your job? Without question the best part of my job is meeting with our partners (members) and discussing how they can make a difference by working with us to support the Foundation mission and vision for the future.

What is the biggest challenge? Finding the time to do all that we want to accomplish in the next 10 years.

How has working for ALF changed your thinking? It has not changed my thinking; I have always been a proponent of the concept of a Land Ethic, it has changed my energy level and enthusiasm because now I feel I can make a direct contribution to fostering the Land Ethic.

What is your favorite Leopold quote/essay?  “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”
