Ames Reads Leopold
Location: Ames Public Library, 5th and Douglas, Ames, IA

Citizens in Ames, Iowa will join other communities in honoring the legacy of Aldo Leopold and his land ethic with the third annual reading of essays from A Sand County Almanac. The event is on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Farwell Brown Auditorium of the Ames Public Library, 515 Douglas Avenue. A diverse group of civic leaders, university faculty, students, and retirees will read passages from Leopold's writings, complimented with photos from the Leopold family archives, and images of nature and the land that Leopold loved.
The event is free and open to the public. Listeners will have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the readings. Copies of A Sand County Almanac will be given to members of the audience in a drawing, and refreshments will be served midway through the afternoon activities. The event is sponsored by the Aldo Leopold Foundation and Leopold's Iowa namesake, the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University and the Ames Public Library.

Join us in celebrating the legacy of Aldo Leopold. Leopold's book, A Sand County Almanac has been read by millions and has informed and changed the environmental movement and has aided in a widespread interest in ecology as a science. Join us as essays from his book are read aloud by community members. Listeners will have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the readings. The event is free and open to the public. Copies of A Sand County Almanac will be on hand to follow along. Refreshments will be served. Clarksville, Maryland
Woodcock Walk
Location: The Middle Patuxent Environmental Area (MPEA) in Clarksville, Maryland

Naturalist Jo Solem will lead a walk in the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area (MPEA) to celebrate one of the earliest signs of spring, the arrival of American woodcocks for mating season. The event will highlight woodcock habitat restoration efforts and a reading of Aldo Leopold’s classic essay about the bird, “Sky Dance,” as part of the national celebration, March 5-7, of Leopold’s pioneering conservation work.
The walk, sponsored by The James and Anne Robinson Foundation, will take place at the MPEA in Clarksville, Maryland on Saturday, March 6, 1-3 pm. Admission is free and registration is not required. Donations will support the Robinson Foundation.
Directions to the MPEA
From U.S. 29 at 32: Take 32 west to the Great Star Drive exit. Turn right onto Great Star Drive. Then make a right onto Summer Sunrise. Continue to Trotter Road and make a left. Proceed about 1 mile to the parking area on the right, just beyond the small traffic circle.
From U.S. 29 at 108: Take 108 west and continue past Centennial Lane. Proceed past Harpers Farm Road to Trotter Road and make a left. Continue to the parking area on the left. If you reach the small traffic circle you’ve gone too far.
