2010 Pre-Conference Workshops

All pre-conference workshops will be held at the Leopold Center on June 17, except for the Land Ethic Leaders program, which will be held June 16-17. Full-day workshops include meals.

Land Ethic Leaders Program (two days)

Instructors: Jeannine Richards, Jennifer Kobylecky, and Buddy Huffaker (Aldo Leopold Foundation), with special guest Scott Russell Sanders (writer and professor emeritus, University of Indiana-Bloomington).

The Land Ethic Leaders program is designed to help you use Leopold’s legacy, writing, and ideas to get people in your community exploring their personal connections to the land. The basis for the program is Leopold’s own method of engaging his family and students in developing a personal land ethic through observing the natural world through scientific inquiry, participating in purposeful work on the land, and reflecting on their experiences. Together, these activities can bring people to a new understanding and respect for the landscape around them. And as Leopold himself said, “We can be ethical only in relation to something we can see, feel, understand , or otherwise have faith in.” In your two days at the Leopold Center you will:

  • Be immersed in Aldo Leopold’s legacy at the Leopold Center and historic Shack;
  • Engage with a community of peers with a variety of backgrounds from around the country;
  • View a rough cut of the new documentary film Green Fire and contribute your ideas to the final product;
  • Take part in and learn to lead activities based on observing the natural world, participating in service, and reflecting individually and as a group;
  • Learn to lead reflective discussions based on pieces of literature or film segments to get people talking about their relationships to the land; and
  • Explore, renew, and deepen your own connection to the land.

Time: June 16: 10:00am-7:30pm; June 17: 8:30am-5:00pm. Location: Leopold Center meeting hall. Cost: $60. Class Limit: 20.

PROGRAM FULL. Another session of the Land Ethic Leaders program will be held Sept. 10-11, 2010. If you would like to receive an invitation to that session, please contact Jeannine Richards at jeannine@aldoleopold.org or submit the form here.
