Paddle from the Dells to the Leopold Shack

What better way to spend a fall Saturday? On September 26, the Aldo Leopold Foundation will host a special canoe trip in partnership with Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center, from just below the Wisconsin Dells Dam to the Pine Island Wildlife Area, with a tour and lunch stop at the historic Leopold Shack and Farm. We’ll start by paddling alongside the striking sandstone formations that made the Dells famous. As we float along, we’ll transition into a very different river landscape, entering Aldo Leopold’s “sand counties.” We’ll stop for lunch and a tour at the Leopold Shack and Farm, and then paddle a bit further to our take-out point at Pine Island, for a total of about 11 river miles. This entire stretch of river is known for abundant wildlife. We may have a chance to see cranes, eagles, turtles, great blue herons, and more. Join us for a lovely fall day of canoeing the Wisconsin River! This trip is appropriate for all ages and experience levels. Advance registration required. Limit 20 people. To sign up, contact Aldo Leopold Foundation Education Coordinator Jennifer Kobylecky at jennifer@aldoleopold.org or 608.355.0279, ext. 27.

When: Saturday, September 26th, 8:00am–2:00pm
Cost: $40 per person (includes all equipment rental, shuttle, lunch and tours)
$20 per person (if you provide your own equipment and shuttle)

New Guide for Family Woodland Owners in Wisconsin

In partnership with the American Forest Foundation (AFF), we've just published a new 80-page handbook to help you work on your woods! My Healthy Woods is an easy-to-read, informative, and inspirational guide to land stewardship in your Southwest Wisconsin woods. We cover everything from conducting a timber harvest to preparing for climate change to long-term planning to ensure the health of your land into the future. Check out a few sample pages! Copies are free for Southwest Wisconsin landowners. You can pick one up at our office or order it online ($2.50 for shipping, limit 5 copies). This handbook is the first of several we will produce for different regions of the country. Currently we are working on the next one for Southern Arkansas!

Also consider joining us for a Conservation Forestry Field Day sponsored by AFF on October 10. The field day will include a tour of Pleasant Valley Conservancy, owned by Tom and Kathie Brock. The Brocks have intensively managed their property for 38 years and are eager to share their love of land restoration with you. The day will also feature speakers on oak management, fire, and wildlife. Download the brochure for more information and a registration form. Advance registration required. All field day participants will receive a copy of My Healthy Woods.

Notes From the Field

On August 26th the Land Stewardship Interns, Kate & Jen assisted grad student Craig Maier with plant sampling in his prairie study plots. Craig is a former ALF employee who is now pursuing a Masters degree at the University of Wisconsin in Agroecology. Craig is investigating the effects of grazing on native prairie plants and what species are palatable to cows to inform future use of native plants in a rotational grazing setting. Kate and Jen helped him complete plant surveys to create a list of the native plants in his study area. This was a great opportunity for the land stewardship interns to enhance and practice their plant identification skills and be actively involved in research.

Want Wood?

Are you looking for some kindling to start fires this winter? The Aldo Leopold Foundation has some pine logs and slab wood that are left over from construction that is dry and would be a good source of kindling. If interested, distribution will be first-come-first-serve by appointment only until materials are gone; for $25 for ALF members and $50 for non-members you can take as much as you like. Please contact Jennifer, Land Stewardship Intern, to set up an appointment, Jen can be reached at 608.963.8712 or jmazalewski@aldoleopold.org, appointments can be set for September 11-16th.
